Fearless is based on the real life events of Chinese wushu master Huo Yuanjia. In his twenties Huo is a sure winner in tournaments. Driven by his obsession to be Tian Jing’s number one fighter, and clouded by his arrogance, he committed an dishonorable act which ultimately lead to the loss of everything he cared for. Driven into exile, Huo’s journey taught him to shed his ego and learn the true virtues of life. When he finally returns to Tianjin, transformed, the greatest challenge awaits...
This was a very personal film for Jet Li. He worked for over a decade on developing the movie, and put all his understanding about wushu into it. He wanted to bow out at his peak when he still can be true to the gracefulness and the poetry of the movements. That doesn't mean he won’t do another action film. Wushu is different because it involves the use of internal energy and every move you make, it takes a toll.
Huo Yuanjia was an icon in China because he united the different schools of wushu and espoused the virtue of sportsmanship. He gave hope to people when the national morale was at an all-time low. We started Huo as an ordinary fighter whose pride and arrogance caused dire consequences, but found redemption from learning that martial arts is a spiritual practice. Wushu is a discipline that promotes peace, not violence, and that became the very heart of our story.
